November 2, 2004 is the offical date to vote for the next president and vice president. Our constitution counts the votes 2 ways, one is the popular vote, which is the vote of the people as a whole, and the other one is called the electoral vote, which is the vote of each state. Each state is allowed a certain number of electoral votes. The total amount of electoral votes is 538. There are 538 Senators and Representatives in the Congress.
The smaller states tend to have less electoral votes and the larger states have more electoral votes. But the amount of
electoral votes a state is given depends on the population provided by the US Census. Each state gets at least 3 votes.
