Hand work is common in the ages of 6 to 12.

My mother is Norwegian and knitting was a national past time. She taught her children and grandchildren how to knit(boys included)

Here are some tips from Mom:

Use big knitting needles, circular are best because the stitches don't drop off.

Use yarn that is not too thick or thin-most yarn from superstores are perfect.

Make sure you start with something easy, like a scarf.
